CASHMORE, Herbert Maurice (1882-1972) Birmingham 1896-1947 (DL 1918, CL 1928)
His greatest achievement was in BIRMINGHAM reference library which he developed and ruled in, mostly, benevolent autocratic fashion, paying exceptionally close personal attention to the smallest administrative details and routines. He was a most generous pioneer and supporter of interlibrary lending. He was a member of the LA Council from 1929, Honorary Treasurer 1936-1945, President 1946 and Honorary Fellow 1947. He was also responsible for the chapter on Poland, the Baltic States, Finland and Russia in the LA's 1938 Survey oflibraries.
